Fridge Recycling Gets Artsy

As a part of Energy Star’s “Recycle My Old Fridge” campaign, contestants show how they turned old refrigerators into pieces of art.

The exhibit of refrigerators is on display at the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C., and runs until Sept. 2. Fifty decorated refrigerators will be on display, and visitors can vote on their favorite “Viewer’s Choice” piece. A panel of judges will also pick the top three pieces based on these criteria: coolest, how recycled materials were used, creativity and best representation of the theme, The Art of Recycling: The Coolest Show in Town. The top choices will be announced Sept. 3.

Energy Star has taken the refrigerator-recycling campaign head on by providing information on conventional versus Energy-Star refrigerator efficiency. Discover how much your old fridge is costing you compared to an Energy Star model, where you can recycle your old fridge, and browse Energy Star-approved refrigerators.

You can also view videos of creative ways other people across the country have recycled their fridges.
